Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some commonly asked questions
What is your writing background?
I’ve loved books and writing for as long as I can remember. I studied history in college because I love to research and write about history. After college, I got a job as a technical writer. I spent years learning how to write incredibly technical materials about things like architecture, engineering, construction, telecommunications, software design, and lots more. I learned new skills every chance I got, and I soon learned how to write and design marketing materials and websites. After working for big companies for several years, I struck out on my own and wrote for magazines, small business, and nonprofits. Next, I expanded into working with clients to write, edit, and publish family history books and memoirs. Along the way, I’ve written and designed brochures, press releases, white papers, nonfiction books, and pretty much every kind of written material that exists.
What kind of editing experience do you have?
As soon as I got a job as a professional writer way back in the 1990s, I started to learn how to be an effective editor. My colleagues edited my writing, and I edited theirs. This was standard practice throughout my career. I learned how to determine if material is correctly structured, can seek out and destroy awkward sentences and word choices, learned what questions to ask to help authors focus on effective rewrites, and I’m a whiz at finding typos. I really love editing and providing other writers with constructive feedback to help make their work even better. I’ve edited pretty much everything: books, magazine articles, business documents, web page text, and so much more.
What kinds of courses do you offer?
I’m in the process of creating courses to help share all of the writing and editing knowledge stuffed in my head after 20 years in this business. I plan to offer courses for all sorts of writers. You can learn how to write a compelling nonfiction book, how to write a family history, how to create a family recipe book, and how to write for magazines/blogs. Just check out my Courses page for current offerings.
Do you offer any one-on-one coaching or consulting?
Yes! I offer coaching for nonfiction authors to help you create great outlines and structures for books, and I also offer book editing services. For those who are working on family history projects, I also offer consulting services to help you put together and print your book.
