I have over 20 years of experience writing all sorts of business documents. I’ve written marketing materials, technical manuals, training documents, press releases, brochures, proposals, webpages, and much, much more. Here are a few samples of the projects I’ve supported over the years. Most of the projects I worked on are copyright protected or protected by government secrecy rules and I can’t post them online. If you’d like to see additional samples, just let me know.
I’ve written a wide variety of technical documents ranging from architecture software, to NASA materials test experiments, to telecommunications hardware. Here are a few examples of some of my technical writing projects that are in the public domain.
Adtran AOS Manual: This is a huge manual for a telecommunications operating system. I created templates that allowed my writing group to take the source files in this 1,000+ page book and create 9 smaller manuals from the same files.
System Controller Manual: This technical manual explains how to set up complex telecommunications equipment.
Software and System Controller Manual: This technical manual explains how to set up and use a complex set of hardware and software for audio/visual applications.
Most of the technical documentation I have written during my career is copyright protected or protected by government secrecy rules and I can’t post samples here. If you’d like additional samples, let me know and I can provide selected excerpts from other projects.
Southeastern Cave Conservancy: I wrote a grant to fund a strategic planning project, found a consultant, and coordinated the entire strategic planning process with the organization’s board of directors. The end result was an excellent and usable strategic plan, including a specific plan for marketing.
National Association of Professional Organizers–Georgia: I worked with this nonprofit organization to design and write an effective marketing plan to help the organization grow. I worked with the board members to determine their goals, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities and wrote a comprehensive marketing plan that they could use to help their group grow.
Web design and copy:
This whole web site is an example of my web design and copy writing experience. You can review other examples at the following sites:
Rocket City Books: I used a bookseller template to create this easy to navigate page.
Discover Historic Travel: This historic travel site uses a Genesis framework template.
Live a Life of Adventure: My other company that encourages women to get involved in hiking, camping, and backpacking uses a Genesis framework template.
Symmetrical Universe: I created an online store for unique symmetrical science fiction and steampunk art.
Southeastern Cave Conservancy: I took a very large and disorganized legacy web site with over 400 pages, designed a user-friendly navigation system, and coded the entire site. I did not write most of the content, although I’m in the process of rewriting most of it (it’s way too wordy!).
Press releases & web stories:
I’ve created a wide variety of brochures and product flyers over the years. Here’s an example of a postcard I created. I found stock images to use, wrote the copy, designed the layout in InDesign, and coordinated printing.
I’ve written one book, Fern Cave: The Discovery, Exploration, and History of Alabama’s Greatest Cave. I’ve also edited several books, most of them related to exploring caves (one of my hobbies). The books I’ve edited include Vertical Bill, The Cave Art of Tom Culverwell, the National Speleological Society’s 2005 Convention Guidebook, and the National Speleological Society’s 2005 Convention Program Guide. I will publish two new books in the fall of 2017.
